THE ASK

In 1999, soil contamination was discovered at a popular Oak Park green space known as Barrie Park, which had been the site of a manufactured gas plant from 1893 to 1931. Upon discovery of the contamination, village and park officials, along with outside environmental consultants, came together to put a remediation plan into place. The plan involved excavating the contaminated soil and putting it into special steel containers that would then be loaded onto railcars and shipped to a disposal site.

In order to minimize public exposure to potentially dangerous airborne contaminants, it was determined that much of the remediation work at Barrie Park would have to be conducted beneath a protective structure. Project stakeholders turned to Sprung for help. The safe, reliable solution for any environmental remediation project, Sprung has an unmatched track record on DOE sites.

HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED

In consultation with an environmental remediation company, the Sprung team engineered a 120’ x 270’ structure capable of handling negative pressure and preventing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from traveling past the containment area. The DOE-compliant structure was also designed to control coal tar odors emanating from the excavation site.

Given the logistics of the remediation plan and the layout of the park, the Sprung structure was crane-lifted into place and moved several times throughout the project. A major factor in selecting Sprung for this project was our cost-effective leasing program, which gave the client the option of returning the structure at the end of the remediation process.
