THE ASK
In 2025, President Donald Trump called on American companies to bring at least three experimental nuclear reactors online by July 4, 2026, as part of a broader effort to strengthen U.S. energy security, accelerate advanced nuclear technology and expand reliable, domestic power generation. Working toward that ambitious goal, Valar Atomics needed two rapidly deployable, clear-span structures at its Utah test site—one to house its Reactor Complex and another for its Fuel Labs. The facilities also needed to provide durable, adaptable space that could support the company’s evolving research, testing and fuel production activities.
HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED
Sprung designed and delivered two purpose-built structures totaling more than 45,000 square feet for Valar Atomics’ Utah test site. Installed in less than seven months, the structures can hold negative pressure and feature clear-span interiors that provide unobstructed space for specialized equipment (including a large gantry crane) and evolving operations. Rolling service doors and multiple personnel entrances allow for efficient movement of materials and staff, while glazing walls maximize natural light, creating a brighter, more productive work environment.
Delivered on an accelerated schedule in order to meet Valar’s July 4 deadline, the structures supported the company as it brought one of the first small-scale nuclear reactors (outside of research labs) online in the United States in nearly 50 years.
