Mecklenburg County – Jail Annex

North Carolina Department of Corrections

The Ask

The jail was experiencing severe overcrowding and needed to come up with a trustworthy, cost-effective and fast way to house its surplus inmates. In order to make sure that Sprung could satisfy their requirements, officials from Mecklenburg County visited two Florida correctional institutes that were already using Sprung structures to house inmates. After their visit, Mecklenburg County officials knew Sprung would not only meet their needs, but also deliver the structures in half the time at half the cost of traditional construction.

How Sprung Delivered

Sprung supplied three high-quality tensioned membrane structures — an administrative facility and two customized inmate housing facilities. The administrative structure contains offices, a visitation area, a conference room and two jail cells. Connecting corridors lead to both inmate housing facilities, where eight pods holding 40 inmates each surround a centered hallway. Pods come complete with beds, bathrooms, a day room and an officer station, making operations smoother for staff and
a maximum of 640 inmates.
