LA DEMANDE
In response to the province’s growing need for more officers on the street, the Ontario Police College required additional training space within a tight timeline. Colliers Project Leaders, working on behalf of Infrastructure Ontario, engaged Sprung in August 2024 to design and deliver an approximately 8,000-square-foot facility that could accommodate dynamic, high-intensity simulation exercises for new recruits. The structure needed to be ready for occupancy by Spring 2025 to support the next wave of trainees. Although the original plan called for the facility to be built at an of old jail site in the city of Guelph, Ontario, a government decision in September 2025 shifted the project to the OPC’s main campus in Aylmer.
COMMENT SPRUNG A TENU PAROLE
Sprung designed and delivered a fully insulated, 90’ x 90’ structure to serve as the OPC’s new dynamic simulation facility. Built and operational in under four months, the structure provides OPC instructors with ample space for simulation-based training exercises, and its virtually air-tight membrane allows for complete darkness (an important element for various training scenarios) with one simple flip of a light switch.
In addition to its flexible, clear-span interior and superior soundproofing, the facility features washrooms and a convenient mezzanine area where instructors can observe the training activities taking place below.
“It can get nice and dark in this structure, which was a big selling point because we’ll set up scenarios where trainees have to come in, in complete darkness.”
