2003年、寒川町の高速道路建設中に、第二次世界大戦時のマスタードガス入り小瓶が土中に埋まっているのが発見された。瓶が1本割れただけで、何百人もの住民が命を落とす可能性があったため、工事は中断された。神戸製鋼所は、土壌を慎重にふるい分けられるよう、このエリアを覆う耐久性と柔軟性を備えた保護建造物をどうしても必要としていた。
スプラングは、高度な負圧空気処理システムを備えた大型建造物を迅速に納品しました。このシステムにより、万が一ボトルが破損した場合でも有毒ガスが地域社会に漏れ出すことがないようになっています。安全のため、この柔軟な建造物の各セクションは杭から離れた場所で組み立てられ、クレーンで所定の位置に吊り上げられました。神戸製鋼はその後、8,000立方メートルの土壌から800本の化学兵器の入ったボトルを発見しましたが、スプラング構造のおかげで事故もなく、タイムリーに作業を完了することができました。
