NDOTは当初、道路を整備するための塩と砂を保管するための、メンテナンスが簡単で移設可能な建造物を1つだけ必要としていた。その構造は、ネバダ州の厳しい気候と強風に耐えるものでなければならなかった。
NDOTは1994年に最初のスプラング構造を購入した。この建造物は、リノとカーソンシティの間にあるワショー・バレーの同じ場所に19年間、破損することなく設置された。NDOTはこの最初の建造物の性能に非常に満足し、州内各地に21基のSprung構造を追加購入した。
