The Ask

When the Buffalo Zoo partnered with Living Exhibits, Inc. to create an interactive avian exhibit called “Boomerang Island: Birds from Down Under,” they needed a bright, welcoming structure that would allow zoo guests to get up close and personal with free-flying budgies, cockatiels, kookaburras and more. Sprung supplied the ideal solution.

How Sprung Delivered

Sprung designed a 1,200-square-foot aviary structure, which was constructed and operational in just two months. Featuring a bright, clear-span interior, built-in screens and two spacious vestibules for ease of entering and exiting the exhibit, this structure provided an optimal setting for visitors to watch and interact with more than 300 birds native to the Australian Outback.

While “Boomerang Island: Birds from Down Under” was planned as a temporary, seasonal showcase, zoo executives did not want to part with the Sprung structure once the exhibit came to an end. Within the first 90 days of having the structure on-site, the zoo opted to purchase the building, with plans to use it for other applications in the future.
