THE ASK

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office needed to quickly replace its damaged jail buildings and restore inmate housing capacity. The temporary solution had to fit within a confined parking lot space while providing the security and functionality needed for daily operations.

HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED

Sprung supplied eight fully insulated 50’ x 110’ structures, each designed to house up to 100 inmates. Built using our patented tensioned-membrane technology, the climate-controlled facilities included sprinkler systems, toilets, sinks, showers, pay phones and common areas with tables and televisions.

The structures’ clear-span design created open sight lines for security while allowing space for features such as guard towers. To improve resilience against future flooding, generators and HVAC equipment were elevated above ground level. Delivered in May 2006 and constructed within five to six months, the facilities helped restore critical jail capacity for New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.
