THE ASK

A key plot point in the long-running HBO series Big Love involved the protagonist launching a gaming operation in partnership with a local First Nations tribe, creating the need for an authentic and visually convincing casino setting. To achieve this, the show’s production team conducted extensive research into the look and feel of tribal gaming facilities across the United States, touring several operating casinos in the process.

When producers visited Southern California’s Soboba Casino, which is housed within a Sprung structure, they noted that the building’s clear-span interior was ideal for filming. As Soboba is an operating casino, filming on-site was not feasible. Instead, the HBO team chose to purchase their own Sprung structures to film in.

HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED

Sprung designed and delivered two 40’ x 50’ structures, which became the actual set for the final two years of the Big Love series. Constructed inside a sound stage in Santa Clarita, California, the structures were modeled after existing Sprung casinos, creating an authentic look and feel. The large, clear-span interiors provided ideal space for filming, while the strength of the Sprung aluminum framework allowed for easy installation of lighting grids and camera equipment.
