CALTRANS District 3

California Department of Transportation

The Ask

When Caltrans encountered problems with its District 3 sand shed on Highway 80 in the Tahoe region, the department turned to Sprung for a reliable and cost-effective solution. Not only did the roof of Caltrans’ existing structure need to be replaced, the lack of an interior loader room within the shed led to significant damage because the sand loader would consistently run into the shed’s wooden frame. District 3 needed a durable, long-lasting structure that could withstand Tahoe-area winters while maintaining a workable internal height clearance

How Sprung Delivered

Sprung designed and delivered a 70’ x 70’ structure with interior clearances that far surpass those of Caltrans’ original shed, allowing for trucks to fit easily inside the structure while accessing the department’s sand supply. Featuring translucent daylight panels to optimize natural light and reduce energy costs, the structure can be relocated or repurposed as needed, and its modular design allows for easy replacement of sections without affecting workflow.
