THE ASK
As pressure on its emergency shelter system intensified, the City of Toronto urgently needed additional 24-hour respite spaces that could be deployed quickly, safely and effectively to support people experiencing homelessness. City leaders wanted a solution that would not only address immediate needs, but also adapt to changing demands over time.
HOW SPRUNG DELIVERED
Sprung designed and delivered three 60’ x 150’ structures to serve as 24-hour respite sites across Toronto. Fully insulated and climate-controlled, each facility accommodates up to 100 residents and includes washrooms, showers, laundry facilities, dining areas and communal spaces that support comfort and dignity.
Installed on accelerated timelines, with the first facility erected in just nine weeks, the structures enabled the City to respond quickly to growing demand for emergency respite capacity. The structures’ adaptable clear-span interiors and relocatable design continue to provide long-term flexibility, as they can be dismantled, moved and reinstalled at alternate sites as community needs evolve.
