James Madison University – Dining Facility

The Ask

JMU was undertaking a two-year construction project to replace the Gibbons Dining Hall, which had been built in 1964. The school decided its best course of action was to erect an interim dining facility so that students could continue to enjoy a high level of food services while the new, conventional-build dining hall was being put up.

How Sprung Delivered

Constructed in less than six months, the Sprung dining structure, dubbed D-Hub, connected seamlessly to modular units from Kitchens to Go (KTG) by Mobile Modular to create a full-service dining center with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as “to-go” windows. Clear-span design, translucent daylight panels and glazing walls around much of the building’s perimeter provided a bright, spacious interior.

The university was able to continue offering the same dining options without sacrificing quality or comfort, and, through leasing options provided by the Sprung and KTG teams, JMU had the flexibility to use the facility for as long as necessary. The Sprung structure was subsequently repurposed twice: first it went from residential dining to retail franchise dining (Dunkin’ Donuts, Chick-Fil-A etc.), and now, upon being purchased by JMU, it serves as a swing space for presentations, events and more.
