The Ask
As part of a large, multi-year project to redevelop its campus facilities, SAIT required a transitional gymnasium to serve students and faculty while a new, permanent Athletics and Recreation Centre was being built. Wanting the transitional facility in place as quickly as possible so as not to disrupt athletic endeavors on campus, stakeholders at SAIT explored a variety of options and found that the fastest and most economical choice was a Sprung structure.
How Sprung Delivered
SAIT’s transitional Wellness Centre was designed, delivered, constructed, and fully operational within just
11 months. Engineered to ensure barrier-free access and year-round use, the 15,000-square-foot facility includes a full-sized basketball court (which can also be used for badminton and volleyball), as well as locker rooms, washrooms and plenty of dedicated space for cardio machines, free weights, and other fitness equipment.
The bright, clear-span structure also features a variety of design elements that help to optimize athletic performance, including a state-of-the-art LED lighting system, daylight panels and a custom glazing wall for optimal natural light, and an energy-efficient insulation package that keeps the interior environment comfortable, no matter the season.
